My ode to turntablism! Growing up in Daly City there were too many DJs and DJ crews to idolize. When I just started writing graffiti I occasionally hung out with my friend, Chris Debol of Spintronix to practice on his turntables… wasn’t long before I knew to stick to graffiti 😂.
One of my first airbrush commissions was for Rick Lee of the Style Beyond Compare crew. He would later become a staple on air DJ in the Bay Area.
I’ll never forget watching Dj Qbert absolutely kill at an early 90’s DMC competition. I want to say he pulled out a spool of thread, put that on the turntable and separated the “needle cartridge from the arm”and scratched underneath the record??? Did that really happen?
A few years ago I saw a true master , DJ Quest, do a ridiculous scratching set at DJ 2Fresh’s gallery in North Beach letting everyone know DJ culture is alive and well.
I’ll always be a wannabe DJ and admire how far the craft has come!
